Broadacre R&D & Soil Health:

GRDC Launches National Soils Education Initiative at Dowerin

The GRDC has launched a new national soils education framework. The initiative consolidates decades of soil moisture, acidity, and nutrition research into a nationally coordinated platform for broadacre growers, agronomists, and advisers. The framework aims to equip producers with practical tools to diagnose soil constraints, optimise fertiliser use, and make data-driven decisions for managing non-wetting and heavy clay soils ahead of upcoming seasonal planning. Seasonal Weather & Crop Outlook:

Update Confirms 10-50mm Moisture Boost - Cold fronts across southern and central Australia delivered up to 50 mm of rain across southern Queensland, NSW, Victoria, SA, and Western Australia. While the long-range September–November outlook indicates a higher likelihood of below-median rainfall across parts of south-eastern Australia, ABARES notes that high subsoil moisture reserves across southern cropping belts will buffer winter crops toward maturation, provided forecast spring totals of 25–100 mm land as expected. Ag Employment & Wellbeing:

Report Details Escalating Off-Farm Work Pressures - The newly released National Farmer Wellbeing Report 2026, commissioned by Norco in partnership with the Black Dog Institute, paints a stark picture of the financial and mental health challenges facing Australian producers. The report reveals that 54% of farmers have experienced declining mental health or depression over the past two years, with 41% actively considering leaving the industry.

To combat escalating input costs—such as diesel, fertiliser, and rising interest rates—59% of producers now rely on off-farm income to keep their agricultural operations afloat. The data highlights a severe workforce strain, noting that nearly one in five farmers are working an additional 30 hours or more per week in secondary jobs, underscoring an urgent need for structural margin relief and regional workforce support. Dairy Processing:

Rabobank Details Shift from Volume to High-Value Protein - A newly released RaboResearch report, Milk protein scarcity challenges Australian dairy's cheese-centric model, details a forced structural pivot for domestic processors navigating a shrinking national milk pool. With Australia's total available milk protein volume contracting nearly 30% over the past decade, Rabobank senior dairy analyst Michael Harvey notes that processors can no longer rely on volume-driven cheese manufacturing to drive growth. Instead, the sector is strategically reallocating milk solids toward high-margin, protein-dense categories—such as nutritional powders, active-lifestyle beverages, and specialized yoghurts—allowing processors to maximize domestic and export returns from a constrained raw milk supply.
