Daily Ag News - 6 May 2026
Today's update brings a critical mix of policy, climate, and industry news. As we approach next week's Federal Budget, the NFF is pushing hard to protect the tax structures that keep family farms viable. Meanwhile, the latest BOM outlook signals a challenging, drier winter ahead for many cropping zones. In the beef sector, Allied Beef is making major expansion moves with a significant feedlot purchase. Finally, we take a moment to stand with our rural communities in support of the upcoming Do It For Dolly Day, and round out the update with the latest opportunities on the Drover Ag Jobs Board.
Federal Budget:
NFF Urges Federal Budget to Protect Family Farms Amid Global Volatility - Ahead of next week's Federal Budget, the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) is calling on the government to deliver sensible tax settings and robust small business investments to help the agricultural sector weather severe supply chain disruptions caused by ongoing global conflicts.
NFF President Hamish McIntyre warned against poorly targeted reforms, emphasising that existing tax structures—such as Capital Gains Tax and trusts—are essential for multigenerational farm succession and must be protected. Instead of short-term fixes, the NFF is pushing for long-term investments to improve Australia's sovereign capability and insulate the industry from global shocks. A key demand includes increasing the Instant Asset Write-Off and making it permanent to spur on-farm productivity and relieve mounting financial pressures on family businesses. Source: NFF
BOM Outlook:
Warmer, Drier Winter Ahead for Cropping Zones - The Bureau of Meteorology’s latest May–July forecast indicates a challenging start to winter for broadacre cropping and pasture growth, driven by unseasonably warm and dry conditions. However some regions are headed for closer to average conditions.
- Rainfall: There is a high probability (60–80%) of below-average rainfall across eastern Australia, south-eastern SA, northern Tasmania, and parts of south-west WA. This dry signal is particularly strong for May, complicating the "autumn break" for many regions.
- Temperature: Both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be well above average nationwide, increasing evaporation risks. Large parts of NSW, VIC, southern QLD, TAS, and south-west WA have a greater than 70% chance of experiencing daytime heat in the top 20% of historical records.
- Climate Drivers: While the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are currently neutral, models suggest a possible shift toward an El Niño and a positive IOD by winter or spring—both of which typically suppress winter rainfall.

Beef:
Yarranbrook Feedlot Purchase Marks Major Expansion for Allied Beef - Toowoomba-based grainfed beef supply chain manager Allied Beef is entering a significant growth phase following its purchase of Mort & Co's Yarranbrook feedlot near Inglewood on the QLD/NSW border. The transaction, understood to be worth around $55 million (bare of stock), will see Allied Beef expand the facility from its current 18,540 head working capacity up to its fully licensed 35,000 head SCU. Construction of new milling, grain, and cattle handling infrastructure is scheduled for late 2026. Source: Beef Central
