Higgins Storm Chasing Warns of Rapid Drought Onset in NSW and QLD - Forecasters are warning producers to prepare for a "rapid onset of drought" across Northern NSW, as well as Central and Southern inland areas. In a recent update shared to their subscriber base and social channels, independent weather service Higgins Storm Chasing highlighted a worrying persistently dry pattern across these inland regions, with only minor coastal showers expected early next week. The lack of meaningful rainfall is raising immediate alarm bells for winter cropping prospects and autumn pasture growth.

Growers in Limbo Amid Supermarket Price Standoff - While shoppers are already feeling the pinch—with data showing fruit and vegetable prices rose 1.4% in January and accelerated to 1.9% in February 2026 — and some minor increases at the supermarket during March and April, it is clear retail inflation isn't making it back to the farm gate. Instead, soaring operation costs are crippling production and transport levies are eating up to 65% of consignment values for regional growers. With major retailers apparently ignoring urgent NFF pleas to cover soaring fuel and freight costs, farmers are being backed into a corner with some being forced to scrap upcoming planting cycles to survive. This will inevitably have massive flow-on effects for employment in the sector and means shoppers will inevitably face fresh produce shortages and retail price hikes as domestic supply shrinks.

Former Minerva WA Abattoirs Put Up for Sale - Two mothballed regional meat processing facilities in Western Australia have hit the market, offering potential new processing capacity for the state's livestock sector. The Great Eastern abattoir near Tammin and the Shark Lake facility near Esperance—both previously operated by Minerva Foods Australia—are being offered via an expressions-of-interest campaign through Colliers. The sale is expected to attract strong attention, given the existing infrastructure and the state's ongoing need for localised, competitive processing capacity.
