Cattle Markets:
Markets Surge as Post-Rain Supply Tightens Online and in Saleyards - Widespread autumn rainfall across northern New South Wales and southern Queensland has shifted cattle market dynamics, sharply contracting physical yardings while driving aggressive restocker and feeder demand. On AuctionsPlus, a reduced offering of 11,986 head met fierce competition, pushing prices significantly higher across all ten young steer and heifer weight categories. Light steers under 330kg led the charge, with near-total clearance rates of 99%-100%, consistently averaging over 600c/kg as southern buyers competed heavily for northern lines.
This tight supply and heightened urgency were mirrored in physical saleyards like Dubbo, where yardings plummeted by nearly 40% to just 1,520 head following the deluge. The restricted numbers saw values spike across the board, with yearling steers destined for feedlots topping at 556c/kg, while active restockers pushed young cattle prices from 380c up to 512c/kg to capitalise on rapidly improving pasture prospects. Wool:
Auction Market Surges to Highest Levels Since 2019 Australia's wool auction market experienced a major breakthrough this week, surging to its highest overall levels recorded since 2019. Buyers aggressively chased Merino and crossbred volumes to secure apparel-grade stock, indicating robust global demand for lower-cost raw wool and fine types. This physical market performance has injected notable confidence into the forward wool market, which has seen heavy trading volumes across 18, 19, and 28 micron contracts. Source: Sheep Central
WA Sheep Trade:
MLA Launches WA Sheep Transition Hub for Producers - Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) has launched a centralised online platform to support WA sheep producers navigating the legislated May 2028 live export phase-out. The new "WA Sheep Transition Hub" provides critical market intelligence and practical on-farm resources to help producers adapt their operations, featuring tools for confinement feeding, feedbase management, and optimising grazing. Additionally, the Hub outlines MLA’s active strategies to build domestic and global sheepmeat demand and connects producers directly to available government transition funding and grants. Source: MLA
Fertiliser:
Sector Under Fire Over Capital Finance Access Restrictions - The Federal Government's Future Farming Security Fund (FFSF) is drawing heavy criticism from industry bodies for restricting capital access ahead of an expected ramp-up in urea demand for winter top-dressing. Industry leaders are putting pressure on the government to widen finance facilities beyond just two major fertiliser companies. Stakeholders warn that the current bottleneck could artificially stifle competition, drive up input costs, and threaten top-dressing efficiencies during a crucial winter cropping phase. Federal Budget:
Senate Estimates Reveal DAFF Overlooked in Federal Budget Tax Changes - During Senate Estimates hearings, executives from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) confirmed that the Federal Treasury did not consult them or ABARES before proposing capital gains tax and trust adjustments in the Federal Budget. Regional leaders and peak farming bodies have raised severe red flags over the oversight, warning that changing trust and CGT structures without analysing premier agricultural statistics will negatively impact intergenerational farm successions.
